Program Overview

Accurate diagnosis is critical in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and new criteria and guidelines are refining how MDS is diagnosed and assessed. This focused activity will include practice recommendations for using the revised diagnostic criteria and for improving the accuracy of assessments in patients who present with cytopenias and may have MDS.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, and other health care professionals who have an interest in enhancing their clinical skills in myelodysplastic syndromes.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the different classifications of MDS based on the revised WHO criteria
  • Recognize the risk of patients presenting with different types of MDS

Instructions for Participation and Credit

This activity is eligible for credit through April 27, 2018. After this date, this activity will expire and no further credit will be awarded.

  4. Complete the post-test. To receive a certificate, you must receive a passing score of 70%.

Dr. Rami Komrokji received his medical degree from Jordan University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at Case Western Reserve University and his hematology/oncology fellowship at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester. He is a Professor of Oncologic Sciences at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, and Clinical Director in the Department of Malignant Hematology at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Komrokji’s research focus is on phase I and II clinical trials in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He is the lead clinical investigator for the MDS program at Moffitt Cancer Center where he has conducted several translational clinical trials and developed one of the largest MDS databases in the nation. In addition, he serves as the Moffitt Cancer Center principal investigator for the MDS Clinical Consortium, a collaboration between six of the largest MDS programs in the country to conduct clinical trials in MDS.
