Program Overview

The optimization of treatment for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) is largely dependent on the treatment-related adverse effects of therapy. Practitioners across the multidisciplinary health care provider team must be able to recognize toxicities associated with therapeutic regimens and employ the appropriate management strategies. In this activity, Dr. DeZern will present the most up-to-date information and data concerning proactive and effective management of treatment-related adverse effects in patients with MDS.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurses, and other health care professionals who may provide care to patients with myelodysplastic syndromes.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize treatment-related toxicities in MDS, including serious adverse effects that may require change in therapy
  • Summarize strategies to manage adverse effects and mitigate toxicities in MDS
  • Outline proactive monitoring strategies for at-risk patients, including the elderly and specific comorbidities

Amy E. DeZern, MD, MHS
Assistant Professor of Oncology and Medicine

Baltimore, Maryland

Dr. Amy DeZern received her medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She also completed a medical internship and residency, as well as a medical oncology and hematology fellowship at Johns Hopkins. Dr. DeZern received her masters of health science in clinical investigation at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC). She is currently an Assistant Professor of Oncology and Medicine at SKCCC at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and is an Attending Physician at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. DeZern has American Board of Internal Medicine certification in internal medicine and hematology. She holds memberships in the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology, and is also involved with the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation. Dr. DeZern’s clinical and research interests are focused on bone marrow failure disorders and hematologic malignancies. She is the principal investigator of a number of clinical protocols for patients with MDS and aplastic anemia, and her findings have been published in multiple scientific journals and presented at national meetings.
