Program Overview

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a disease of older persons; as such, the goals of care in elderly patients are different than those for younger patients. Comorbidities are common in older adults and may affect treatment tolerance and prognosis. Given the heterogeneity of the disease and the heterogeneity of the geriatric population, strategies that allow for individualized, risk-adapted treatment selection will provide the best outcomes. Evidence and evolving thought have altered the treatment paradigm in MDS, incorporating new therapeutic options, improving hematologic response, and prolonging overall survival.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, and other health care professionals who have an interest in enhancing their clinical skills in the management of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the considerations for preferred continuation of active therapies in MDS patients, including dose schedules, tailoring therapy, and duration of therapy, according to specific agents used and specific patient characteristics
