Program Overview

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are clonal disorders primarily of the elderly that are characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis and increased risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). MDS are considered clinically heterogeneous conditions because they can present with widely varying degrees of severity and because patients with similar features at diagnosis can have large differences in how their disease evolves over time.

There have been significant advances across many aspects of MDS including diagnosis (development/investigation of new diagnostic techniques), classification (new classification criteria have been developed), prognostic scoring systems (developed and validated), and new treatments have been approved.

This MDS Quarterly e-Newsletter incorporates a case vignette that illustrates the use of current diagnostic tests and prognostic scoring systems in daily clinical practice as well as addresses the practical aspects of delivering prognostic information to patients and/or their caregivers.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, and other health care professionals who have an interest in enhancing their clinical skills in the management of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the diagnostic and prognostic tests that should be performed to appropriately diagnose MDS in an elderly patient and to accurately risk stratify that patient
  • Outline potential comorbidities that may be present in an elderly patient that may complicate diagnosis and/or prognosis in MDS
  • Identify questions commonly asked by patients and/or their caregivers concerning diagnosis and prognosis in MDS

This activity is eligible for credit through February 24, 2017. After this date, this activity will expire and no further credit will be awarded.

Dr. Tania Dickson graduated from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, with a class I honors bachelor of science degree, majoring in biochemistry. She received her doctor of philosophy degree from the Institute of Reproduction and Development in Melbourne, prior to completing a 4-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Vanderbilt Cancer Center, Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Dickson has over 15 years of medical writing and medical direction experience and is knowledgeable in the preparation of scientific content for Continuing Medical Education across numerous print and multimedia modalities.

Eugene R. Tombler, PhD, FACME

Dr. Gene Tombler received his PhD in Biomedical Sciences as a Public Health Service grant trainee within the Molecular, Cellular, Biochemical and Developmental Sciences Program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine of NYU. He has an extensive interdisciplinary background in the biomedical sciences and more than 15 years’ experience in oncology. He has served as a medical writer, publication planner, and medical director in both educational and promotional medical communications. Gene has developed oncology programs for prostate, breast, ovarian, lung, liver, and kidney cancers, as well as for hematologic malignancies including AML, CML, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.
