Program Overview

The management of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is based on stratification into various risk categories. For patients with lower-risk MDS, treatment goals and therapeutic paradigms differ from those of intermediate- and higher-risk MDS patients. This activity will review the management of patients with lower-risk MDS, including considerations for initiating therapy, treatment options based on patient assessment, and risk-stratification and supportive care measures to address cytopenias.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, and other health care professionals who have an interest in enhancing their clinical skills in the management of myelodysplastic syndromes.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify risk factors associated with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) compared to higher-risk disease
  • Describe treatment options for patients with lower-risk MDS based on risk-stratification and decision-influencers for initiating therapy
  • Outline supportive care management strategies for patients with cytopenias, including anemia and thrombocytopenia
